My experience with AI in libraries has developed alongside persistent burnout. This presentation examines the messy middle between experimenting with AI and building sustainable practices around it. AI can reduce some forms of work, but adopting it also creates new responsibilities involving instruction, evaluation, ethics, policy, and organizational change. Drawing on my experience introducing AI-supported tools and programs, I will discuss why innovation cannot simply be added to an already unsustainable workload. Using the CALM framework—Communication, Adaptability, Learning, and Management—I will consider how organizational culture can either intensify burnout or create the conditions for thoughtful change. Moving forward has required me not only to adopt new practices, but also to let go of tasks, services, and expectations that no longer serve the library.
