Most academic patrons don't begin research inside the library's ecosystem—they start on Google, Google Scholar, and publisher platforms. When they hit a paywall there, proxy-based access is powerless to help, and the resulting login failures aren't a user behavior problem; they're the cost of infrastructure never designed for how research actually happens.

This session draws on Coastal Carolina University's migration from EZproxy to OpenAthens federated access to argue that authentication must move to the point of need. CCU's migration cut access-related support requests by 80%, not through user training, but because the infrastructure finally met users where they were.
