Most academic libraries have seen their subscription budgets remain flat or continually decrease for the past two decades. In 2026, any “low-hanging fruit” is gone, and no subscription cancellation will go unnoticed. Libraries must try to estimate the impacts of subscription cuts to guide decision-making, engage in proactive outreach and set instructional focus areas.
This session will describe how collections personnel at a library in a difficult budget environment are using collections data and backend knowledge of electronic resources to estimate the impacts of subscription cuts, and demonstrate effective ways to present information for internal discussions with other library departments.
